How To Loose Thousands Of Dollars On Search Engine Optimisation

Published January 7, 2011

SEO is still a great big grey area when it comes to what you get for your money. It’s a highly profitable arena to play in for ‘experts’ who claim they will get your business the top spot on Google.

Sadly, it can be an expensive trap for many unsuspecting business owners!

A lot of these companies actually deliver what they promise! Yes, they will get you the top spot on Google…the real question is: what is this spot actually worth??

I’ll give you an example. I recently came across a company who claims to be an ‘industry leader’, they’ve served over 1000 clients, and they’re at the ‘forefront’ of web design, SEO and so on. On their website they have some examples of companies that they got the #1 ranking on  Google Australia. All well and good up to here.

Then I looked at the 6 keywords they had chosen for their client: the sum of monthly searches for these keywords in Australia was 145.

3 out of six keywords had less than 12 searches/per month.

Then I typed in 3 other headers from their website into the Google keyword tool, and totted up 35,500 monthly searches just like that.

So, what happened there?

They didn’t pursue the keywords that actually held all the value! ’cos that would have been harder, and maybe unsuccessful.

A keyword isn’t worth the paper it’s written on if nobody is actually looking for it. Many business owners spend thousands of dollars for a #1 position on the search engines, but what they don’t realize is that some keywords are simply not worth pursuing!

If you are already paying someone to do your SEO, just run the keywords they’ve assigned to you through the Google keyword tool and check how many ‘local monthly searches’ they get (just make sure that you specify Australia as your location). In Australia, it’s actually still reasonably easy to get a good ranking on the search engines for most businesses, simply because the competition online is nowhere near as big as in the US (for example). We include your basic SEO in our Webdesign for free and you can readin this success story what it did for one of our clients: http://webdesignthatsells.com.au/success-stories/

Bottom Line? Make sure that when it comes to Search Engine Optimisation, you make the right decision and invest your dollars wisely!
